Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise serious questions about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain rightwing voices to go on the offensive.
“This is quite rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that came before the legislative vote to enact a law mandating the documents' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of materials that included little new data.
